Learning to Stay Focused
Tuesday, June 26th, 2007This past weekend the BAC 18U girls team played in the Junior Olympic Qualification Tournament in San Jose. The tournament was full of the top teams in the area and was highly competitive. Throughout our six games there were a lot of great plays made by the BAC players, the greatest of which were mental.
In water polo it is easy to get frustrated at times when shots aren’t going in or you think the referee is missing a call, particularly in games when the stakes are high. I was pleased to see each of our BAC athletes overcoming their initial waves of frustration with the unlucky tide and regaining focus on what’s important - concentrating on the elements of the game that can be controlled. It was easy to see that as our team channeled its energy toward executing each play as well as possible that the tide shifted in our favor.
It’s important for all BAC athletes to remember that there is always an element of risk involved in competing. Things aren’t always going to go your way, no matter who you are. Regardless of how much energy you put forth in practices or competitions you still may end up not taking home the 1st place prize. Remembering the goal of staying focused on what you can control is the best way to engage with athletics and also a great way to approach all other aspects of life. As the BAC 18U Girls Water Polo Team demonstrated this weekend, not dwelling on what cannot be changed is a great way to enjoy athletic competition and to reap the greatest reward it has to offer - self improvement.
